Project Brief- 3D Modelling
For this assignment, I am a worker at Epic Games, they are creating a new IP (Internet Protocol). My boss has told me I can work on a new object or environment asset for the game. I will be researching Epic Games and other assets to give me inspiration. While coming up with these designs I have to keep in mind their expectations and make it look as professional as possible.

Task 1-Research
Epic Games

Epic Games is an American company based in the video game industry in North Carolina, focusing on developing video games. They are a very old company, founded in 1991, 27 years ago. When the CEO, Tim Sweeney founded Epic Games it was called Potomac Computer Systems. They released ZZT as their first game in 1991. After the first game being released Tim Sweeney decided to change the companies name to Epic MegaGames, but they changed it again in 1999, to what we all know as Epic Games.
They have recently blown up with their award winning Fortnite. It had won: 2018, Teen Choice Award for ‘Choice Video Game’. Other nominees include; Fire Emblem Heros, The Legend of Zelda:Breath of the Wild, Overwatch, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Super Mario Odyssey. It was outstanding at increasing the companies Net Worth, before Fortnite (2016) it was US$4.5 Billion, after however they are expected to surpass US$8.5 Billion, Which is insane to Earn so much in roughly 2 years.
Blizzard Entertainment

Blizzard Entertainment is an American video game developer company, based in California. This company focuses on developing and designing video games. It is a daughter company which means it is controlled by another company (Activision Blizzard), however it is more known than the original company. The company is as old as Epic games, 1991, they are 27 years old, the name previously was Silicon & Synapse, also changing their name, again later on in 1993, to Chaos Studios. The reason why I picked this company as a similar games developer was that there was a lot of controversy when Epic Games released Fortnite. Many Blizzard fans were ‘insulted’ and felt like Epic Games was copying a very popular game, Overwatch. Clearly there is some similarities, just to show a few similar characters/Skins:

The reason why everyone stirred up so much trouble was that they felt that all the hard work Blizzard had created was getting copied and used for something that would bring more money into a different company.
Visual Research for: Action role-playing games.
I will apply my knowledge of Visual elements and principles to these objects:

GAME-Skyrim
The first thing I can notice with this book is how rustic it looks. The effect the light is giving to the object is intensifying how realistic it looks, the shine from the top and the shadow from the bottom gives it a lot of depth and the shading looks accurate. Dark shades of color was added to this object to increase the detail and make it look more old and worn down. The shades also give it a more complex look (detailed). Another thing that makes it look worn down is the ‘crinkled’ pages, which was created by using dark colors for the shading. The golden hue of the book expresses illumination and magic. The lines on this object are very small and thin. This adds to how realistic it looks, for example if it had thicker lines and less shades, it would look less realistic, worn and more animated.

GAME- Mass Effect 3
A very common asset in action role-playing games is guns! You will either get a sword, gun or both. It depends on when the game is set. The light from above is giving it a nice sharp and realistic feel. The large indents also gives it a more complex and accurate look to the rifle. The red hue to the weapon really gives it depth, it really emphasizes the deep blue of the gun, the color also is giving a cold and heavy feel, just like metal. The silver bands along the body of the gun, gives it a polished look, however the scratches of metal bordering it makes it a lot more realistic. The nicks and scrapes gives it more detail, and makes it look used.

GAME- Bioshock Infinite
I have decided to look at another gun, however this time, this gun is quite old fashioned (unlike the previous one). Due to the golden trim and shine, it also looks very royal however it doesn’t all look shiny and clean, the wooden grip and the cylinder have a accurate dullness to them. The dark color of the gun compared to the wood and gold, compliments each other very well, like I said before it gives it a good looking royal feel. I would also like to acknowledge the small detail * here, I think it really stands out among the rest of the gun, it definitely brings out a simple looking gun to a more complex level.

GAME- Skyrim
I have decided to look at something natural, just in case I chose to go down this path with my final design. I will be analyzing the background as well as the flower. Starting with the object that made me choose this picture. The flower has a unnatural look compared to its surroundings. In real life, the closets flower to this is a Harebell, which looks like this;

Harebells often range between dark blues to light purples, depending on the sun exposure etc. Going back to the game flower, the different shades of purple and blue really stand out and make it seem almost odd to place it in such a dark environment. However having a object stand out like this allows the player to have more visibility when looking for them, you wouldn’t have to look far. Towards the top of the flower there is a dark patch fading into the blue I mentioned before, this is a nice transition shade for the flower to the stem. I also noticed that it seems like the flower almost has veins, it’s nicer to look at with this much detail added to the flower. The stem seems off place too, the lines seem too strong! It is placed in front of the dark green bushes joining onto the very loud flower, Maybe it’s because it’s in focus, however from the perspective this screenshot was taken it seems very ‘out of place’, like I said before it will change the players focus to the object, and taking away from the surroundings. Speaking of the surroundings…
The background is slightly out of focus, but we can easily see whats what, firstly, the trees and the ground across the river, to me the trees are there to remove any negative space, same goes for the river, it gets rid of excess walking space for the player too. The grass and moss on the ground really brings out the detail and makes it seem more realistic, compare to if it didn’t have the overgrowth.
Poly Modelling/Plane Modelling
Poly modelling is the use of a large object, normally a cube, Cuboid or sphere, and manipulating it in different ways to create other objects and shapes.
There is so many ways to change an object, as you can see in the diagram above these are all things you can do to change your basic shape into a slightly more intricate one. This is the easiest method of modelling to use for beginners, as it allows some errors unlike Plane Modelling.
Plane modelling allows you to be precise while using panels not shapes, it takes up more time making and rendering. Even before making your desired object, you’d need to make a studio, which is time consuming. this is a studio below:
After you create this you can start by using the things I mentioned in the diagram to modify your panels, to make them complex.
Games Research And Their Audiences.
Fortnite

Fortnite can be played on PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and some types of mobile. The Genres this game belong to are Survival and Battle Royal(e).
over 125 million players worldwide, the free-to-play team survival game has risen rapidly to become a leading name among the online gaming market.”
Fortnite’s audience is rising at a insane pace, as you may know, Fortnite has been rated by PEGI and it has been rated as a 12, so it’s fit for everyone to play above the age of 12. They rated it as this because of the mild violence. As it is a 12, many parents worry that their young child is getting exposed to such violence. One parent:
Recently, a mum issued a warning after her four-year-old son broke his arm while attempting to imitate the game.
Minecraft
There is three different versions of Minecraft depending on the device you play it on (games consoles, PC, Mobile). On mobile it’s called Minecraft:Pocket Edition, it’s called Minecraft:— Edition on other devices, the — being the games console you’re playing on. The Genres for this game are Sandbox (Open World) and Survival. Depending on the version you play, Minecraft has a range of ratings, from 7+ to 13 this is because there is only unrealistic violence towards unrealistic characters. Some parents worry for their children:
Her biggest worry, she says, is that it reduces his interest in the real world.”
The biggest argument here is that not only Minecraft will do this to a child. Almost all video games are more interesting than the real world. However a lot of parents agree with this worry, for all types of games for their child.
Splatoon
Splatoon can be only played on Wii U (Splatoon 2 can be played using Switch). The genre of this game is a Third-Person Shooter. Splatoon has an age range from 7+ to 13, much like Minecraft. However after reading about reviews and articles it seems this game is played by teens and young adults:
Intended age is probably pretty low, but I’d guess the average age is probably somewhere between 15 and 20.” -Reddit User, ‘dudepersonme’
It might not be aimed at teenagers but it does grab their attention. With it being a child friendly game and also interests the older generations, it would be a good game to play with the family, it would keep everyone attention.
Left 4 Dead
L4D can only be played on Windows, Xbox 360 and Mac, probably because it’s an old game and hasn’t been remastered. The genres of this game is First-Person Shooter and Survival Horror. The age rating on this is 18, there is a lot of violence and gore, which means children can’t buy it in shops, obviously, however that doesn’t stop them from playing it, mostly they’d get their parents to buy it for them as they enjoy the violence. Parents also believe that it builds trust with strangers, this obviously can be a good and bad thing.
This game may be fun but they curse A LOT.”-Parent, Mewmew
PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds
PUBG can be played on PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and mobile. The genre of this game being a Battle Royal(e). The age rating of this game is 16, as there’s violence and encourages the players to kill each other. However the main statistic consists of people aged 14 to 25.
The “Blood Splatters” are just little puffs of red mist, and they fade after half a second.” -Parent, Shelly F.
Parents don’t seem to mind this game as much as other types of games, reading articles and reviews on this game, it seems like an all-round good game for teens and adults, the only bad thing I came across, as there is a voice chat function this allows players of all ages to chat and say anything, whether it be good or bad.
Artist Research

In my research I hope to collect a good understanding of detail, patterns and the importance of shading to create something look realistic.
Aniko Kolesnikova
Aniko Kolesnikova, Mandarin Duck and Mymandarinducky are her online alias’. She wrote a article about how she quit her job as a photo editor at Fashion Studio. The title was:
‘Bored Panda Helped Me Quit My Day Job To Make Fantasy Book Covers For A Living.’ She also explained (in her blog) that she wants to create polymer clay sculptures, to inspire other hard working artists to not give up and stay positive.
I sculpt, paint, bake, take pictures, film tutorials, edit, research and try to smile a lot”-Aniko, On her blog.
I was drawn to her art work, from seeing her take a basic, normal journal and change it into something completely different, into a piece of 3D art. She uses polymer clay and clay tools, to create the small details, I will show you some now:
(click on them to see them in full detail)
I like this style, where things are really detailed, probably because this way I know it took a lot of time to make and the artist must have put a lot care into this piece. As all her art work is kept up to this standard I really respect her as an artist. Her work is original and done with so much care for every piece. The pieces I have shown are just a couple of my favorites, and from them, it may seem that she doesn’t use much color, however a large part of being an artist is color and she definitely represents color well in these next pieces:
The colors are bold and strong, making the 3D design stand out even more. I’ve seen a lot of her work now, and you have too, I think we can agree she is extremely talented. Overall I am very pleased I chose to study her art work, it gave me an insight to very detailed 3D artwork.
WD (Wild Drawing)
WD, aka Wild Drawing, known for being a famous street artist, born in Bali, Indonesia. He studied Fine Arts and Applied Arts and graduated in both, and began creating art all over Asia, Europe and America as a solo artist. Being a urban street artist doesn’t mean they make graffiti, street art is more acceptable, compared to graffiti, graffiti is often words or images relating to gangs or poverty, a lot of graffiti artists come from such places. The following photos are by WD.
WD’s art work often carries a large topic, such as Poverty, and race (like in the first and third photo). Having a important topic such as this in a piece of public art, could upset people but also makes them start to think about their decisions that day etc. I enjoy looking at his art work and how powerful the impact it can have on society. I chose to look at his work because I was drawn to how realistic and complex the patterns are, overall I enjoyed how he works with his environment, making things look well designed and realistic. It really brings a building alive:
Patrick Commecy
Patrick Commecy, a famous, French, street artist. He transforms boring and ugly French building sides into pieces of art, along with his team of muralists. His artwork increases the tourists and the morale of the public. In many ways he’s doing the community a favour. If you ask me I think it brings the streets alive, and makes it more appealing to look at, here are some before and after photos, to understand what I’m speaking about;
The before photos are dull and boring, I hope you also agree that he helped those buildings. The windows of these buildings look insanely real, same goes for the people if you look to quickly. The point of view and shading is the most important thing when creating artwork like this. As he has mastered this technique he is able to ‘cut in half’ buildings and create an ‘alley’. He completely transforms buildings with his art. Making 2D balconies look real, and ‘windows’ seem open to the public.
Task 2

(20-30 Rough Asset designs)
These objects all come under my chosen genre, and are all miscellaneous. I will enjoy developing one of these designs in 3D as it will be a new experience. Having some rough ideas for my designs will give me more freedom to develop and change one item.
Developing My Design In 3DSMax
The object I chose ended up being a bottle (perfume or potion). I made a few options and in a couple I made the liquid too, to help me decide what shape to go for, especially since I haven’t modeled a bottle before, and it looked complicated. However I don’t think I did a bad job for my first time modelling an object like this.

I chose to develop this bottle. I like the simple style, and it reminds me somewhat of a diamond. I realised after I did my research that it would be extremely difficult to add a 3D design, whether it have been a bottle or any object. I would have found that extremely difficult especially since I have to manage my time well too, however I have gone with this shape, as after I add TurboSmooth to it (I’ll be adding that later on) it will seem slightly softer and ‘curvy’. The thought behind this bottle style came for this photo:
It may seem like a stretch but I truly got the idea of using the bottle from this art by WD. It had the curves and curls that interested me. My original thought was that the bottle I make could end up between those lines.
Here’s how I created my asset:

I began on a Front perspective and used the Line tool in Shapes to outline the design, making sure the end lines line up as best as I could. I also changed the * , making the bottom part angled slightly. To me it gave it more of a realistic look. Keeping diagonal lines to a minimum as it could look too confusing and complex, I wanted to go for a simple design.

After creating the outline I used Lathe to make it into a 3D shape, ending up looking odd:

As you can see it looked odd, however using the Axis under Lathe, I managed to make it look exactly how I wanted it to.

I decided to change the scale slightly and made it slimmer, I like this a lot better than the previous one.

This is the seamless cork design I have decided on.

This is the bottle without rendering, I added TurboSmooth onto it, with the final cork design and the final glass. It doesn’t look good right now but after I add the liquid and render it, it will look much better.
(This is the final un-rendered design + the liquid)
RATIONALE- How did I obtain this design?

From my rough designs I chose this one, it’s much slimmer than the design I ended up with. The top of the developed bottle is very similar to my rough design, I was pleased as this was one of the things about the bottle I wanted to keep. The ‘cork’ is larger and seems like a better fit compared to a smaller one, it stands out well and makes it seem more of a bottle however as its un-rendered the bottle is looking dull and the cork looks out of place. The liquid inside the bottle will be black, in the final design. It also looks well placed.
Final Design

Evaluation
During this evaluation I will critique my work with my honest opinion, whether it be good or bad.
My research on Epic games was minimal and I could have had a couple more paragraphs on just that topic. The brief told me to research other companies similar to Epic games, the one I chose to compare it will was Blizzard Entertainment. To me it seemed as if I was more interested in Blizzard and not the company ‘I was working for’, reading back on what I wrote about, realizing now that I sounded bias (using words such as ‘used’ and ‘copied’) and didn’t take into the consideration how much effort Epic Games must have put into their characters. The visual research for action role-playing games, I could have included why I chose the objects to look at and how they will help in my designs. Choosing the objects to research, I was bias and picked things that was in my comfort zone aka games I normally play and like the graphics of. I learnt that having an object that stands out, can look odd among the background and can also draw the players eye away from the scenery around. When an object stands out, it should have more detail than an object that doesn’t, as the player will most likely look at the thing that stands out compared to the object that doesn’t. I also realized that duller looking guns, look much older and worn compared to a shiny gun. They also tend to need more highlighted areas as they’d look too dull for the game, especially if the player is holding it, as you would a gun. From my game research I had noticed a recurring theme, parents worried about their kids mental and physical state (mental-nightmares etc. Physical-Not going out enough, gaining weight). I don’t have control on the physical side of things however I avoided using red (blood) to reduce the chances of someone complaining. I would have asked my peers about their views on video games and got their opinion on things like the ‘Blood’ situation and the artists I chose. Researching Aniko Kolesnikova, opened wider options for me, however after I soon realized that it would be almost impossible to attempt those sort of 3D designs in 3DSMax, especially since I’m inexperienced.
My research played a big part in my rough designs, and final product. In total I researched four objects, two guns, a flower and a book. Beginning with a odd range of objects let me expand my limits and create something completely different from the things I researched, to which I did. Both street artists and Aniko all did something to do with nature and plants, a good portion of my rough designs are different variations of flowers and a couple book designs. After running out of ideas for nature designs, I decided to go back to my game theme ‘Action role-playing games’ and drew some miscellaneous ideas, such as shields, bottles, crystal balls, and (sort of chemical) tanks. All designs don’t have much detail and are simple, this will allow me to develop it easily, compared to if I had a very detailed rough design.
I designed my ideas based on the research, game genre and project brief, so I believe they are suitable. I used physical materials for the liquid and bottle, to add the cork material onto the bottle, I used Multi/Sub object to add a seamless photo of real cork to the bottle. I spent a lot of time finding the correct material and color for the glass, of course it was made from glass, however there were different types of glass (in physical materials) such as, solid geometry, thin geometry and frosted glass. In the end I chose thin geometry as I liked the clear view at the liquid inside. I think this design is quite simple compared to the Unit 1 Building, however I do like how I learnt about different things in each Unit. I was impressed that I made my final design from just a line, learning how to use Lathe, will help me in future 3DSMax projects. If I were to this again, there are some things I would change. If I had enough knowledge about 3DSMax I would have liked to attempt at making a environment and design it to be my ‘perfect world’. I’d think it would be extremely cool to make something like that.
I aimed my object at an audience of all ages, I stayed away from using red (as I have previously mentioned parents worried over their kids seeing too much blood). My object is fit for all ages. I believe my work meets the brief as it asked to create a object that would be used for a game (genre of my choice). My object is appropriate for everyone, it has no reference to age, gender or race, so it’s perfectly fine for everyone.
I used 3DSMax to create my final design (and a couple of rough designs) as you know. I believe the quality is good, the materials I chose were suitable and fitted well with each other, obviously my final design was much better quality than my rough designs. I always aim for the best presentation, however when explaining my development of my final design, to some it could seem slightly messing (with the photos) however I’m not changing it as I like presenting it like that, as it’s my blog I want to keep it personalized . I said previously how I connected my final design to my research, however I realize how much of a stretch there is, from nature and guns to a bottle. I believe they are all under the fantasy category as well, as the genre I originally chose action role-playing.
CONCLUSION-
Overall, I am pleased with what I have created and the amount of work I put in, I would have changed and added a couple things. Starting with the research I would have researched at least one 3D artist just to get a 3D point of view from the art. One thing I skipped out on, once knowing what I was making I should have looked at some bottles to compare my ideas with them, I would definitely do this next time. I have improved and have become more confident with 3DMax, of course I still need so much practice and help, but eventually I’ll end up with great results if I put in the effort and work hard. I have researched productively and haven’t wasted much time. On my previous unit I had spaced out rough designs and added more detail, something I didn’t have/do this time, the biggest difference between this unit and my previous one, is was I used to make it. I used 3DSMax in this unit and Photoshop in the previous one. I asked around my peers and they liked what I created, however said that this was an opportunity to create something completely original and different, however they did like the original colors (black and purple), as they don’t usually see these colors put together.
